1- C

Option (a) is correct. ‘Give’ can also mean ‘To yield to

physical force’. Option (b) is also correct. ‘Give’ used

as a noun means ‘the quality or state of being springy

or flexible’. Option (c) is incorrect. ‘Give ground’, which

means ‘to give some concession’ would have been

correct here. The use of the article ‘the’ is incorrect.

Option (d) is correct as ‘give away’ means ‘to disclose

or betray’.

2- C

Option (a) is correct. ‘Bring off’ means ‘to carry to a

successful conclusion’. Option (b) is correct. ‘Bring in’

means ‘to produce or earn profit’. In option (c) ‘bring

out the rear’ is incorrect. It should be ‘bring up the rear’

which means ‘to come last or behind’. ‘Bring about’ in

option (d) means to ‘to cause to take place’.

3 - B

The paragraph is critical of this drug called Soma.

According to the author it delivers no ‘life defining

insights’. What it does is induce a ‘mindless, imbecile

happiness – a vacuous escapism”. In such a context

the best answer would be (b) as such a drug may

very well insulate the user from reality. Option (a) can

be eliminated as the drug is spoken about as some

sort of deliverance from misery. This is a shift from the

tone of the paragraph, which is critical of the drug.

Option (c) speaks about the drug’s stimulating effect,

which is a complete departure from the paragraph.

Option (d) can be eliminated as the focus here is on

the immediate effect of the drug.

4 - C

Option (c) is the correct answer as it continues the

idea of experiences that Second Life offers; ‘these

experiences’ refer to ‘types of experiences’ discussed

in the last line. Option (a) is incorrect as it breaks the

link of the paragraph by discussing business and user

groups. Both options (b) and (d) can seem close.

However, options (b) and (d) build upon an idea that

needs to be expressed first, viz. option (c). First, we

need to state that these experiences are created

collaboratively by the residents only then can we bring

in option (b) or (d). Option (b) is a conclusion about

Second Life being an experiment in collaborative

experience innovation. Option (d) mentions how Linden

Labs provides tools to the residents to create these

experiences.

5 - C

In the question statement, the news reporter has

concluded that there will be no cabinet reshuffle, as

the high level meeting did not take place. But from the

information given it cannot be inferred that the high

level meeting is a necessary condition for the cabinet

reshuffle to take place. In other words, a reshuffle

could also happen without a high level meeting. This is

the central flaw in the news reporter’s argument. This

is best expressed in option (c). Option (a) is incorrect,

what it describes is the reverse of what has happened

in the argument. Option (b) is incorrect, as we cannot

assume that the news reporter’s conclusion is based

on popular perception. More importantly it brings in

information, which is outside the scope of the

argument. Option (d) is incorrect, as it does not explain

the logical flaw. There is nothing wrong in considering

the high level meeting a desirable precursor, but it is

not the necessary precursor.

6- B

The conflict in the question statement is that the moral

system considers speaking the truth praise worthy

only when there are significant incentives for telling

lies. Then the author adds that speaking the truth out

of habit is also praiseworthy. In order to solve this

discrepancy, we have to show that the second

statement is not contradictory to the first. This is done

in option (b). It effectively demonstrates that the second

condition is actually a subset of the first condition.

Option (a) is incorrect. It has no impact on the

discrepancy and is primarily providing a reason for

why people speak the truth. Option (c) is beyond the

scope of information offered in the question statement.

Option (d) is similar to option (a), as it also does not

solve the discrepancy mentioned in the question

statement.

7- B

This question is essentially a choice between options

(b) and (c). The link between statements B and D can

be seen. “This disdain for the aesthetic…” in statement

D clearly has to follow statement B, which introduces

this ‘aesthetic’. However, the choice after BD becomes

difficult. What makes option (b) correct is the link (DA).

Statement D presents the idea that this criticism or

disdain may have its origin in Puritanism, which fears

a connection between aesthetic and pleasure.

Statement A adds to this by saying that in recent climate

considering an artwork good simply because it gives

us pleasure is courting derision or mockery. Statement

C can come in the end to begin a new idea. If we look

at option (c) none of the statements have very strong

connections. There is nothing to link statements D and

C and not very much to link statements C and A.

Statement C starts discussing why aesthetic has been

criticized in the twentieth century whereas statement

A again goes back to discussing the link between

aesthetic and pleasure.

8-C

This question also ultimately is a contest between two

close options, (a) and (c). D can be identified as the

opening sentence and mandatory pair (B-C) is also

present in all the options. To choose the correct option,

think about the flow of the paragraph. It starts with a

statement that is broad in scope. Statement D states

that apartheid laws institutionalised racial discrimination.

If we consider the pair (B-C) however, it is only talking

about one specific act, which narrows down the

scope of the discussion considerably. Now, we have

statement A, which again compared to (B-C) is a little

broad in scope as it discusses different aspects which

were affected by these laws. Therefore, (D-A) goes

much better with the flow of the writing.

9 - C

A ‘paean’ is ‘a joyous song or hymn of praise’ similarly

a dirge is ‘a song or hymn of grief or lamentation’. The

relationship here between the two words is that of

the first word being a form of expression of the second

word. Option (a) although close is not the correct

answer as a lullaby induces sleep, it does not primarily

‘express’ the feeling of sleepiness.

10 - B

‘Pique’, which means ‘a transient feeling of wounded

vanity ‘and’ resentment, are synonyms. ‘Approbation’

and ‘approval’ are also synonyms.

11- D

Each of the three clauses in the statement can stand

alone as a complete sentence. Therefore, they need

to be separated by semi colons. Option (b) is incorrect

as it changes these clauses into phrases where a

semi colon is not needed.

12 - B

Option (a) is incorrect as ‘of’ is not used with ‘despite’.

Option (c) is incorrect as ‘through’ is an incorrect

preposition in the context. Option (d) is incorrect as ‘in

spite of’ is a preposition and needs to be followed by

a noun clause.
